As an Australian parent, I find the typical American diet absurd! My children take either a brown bread sandwich with meat and/or cheese plus 1-2 raw veg such as grated carrot (or else a pasta dish with tuna, chicken or beef, plus veg - 1 cup sized serving). They are allowed to choose 1 treat from the treat box - all have less than 100 calories. They also get 2-3 serves of freshly-cut raw fruit or veg; for example, carrot sticks, grapes, apple slices, melon, cucumber sticks, cherry tomatoes). The only drink they take to school is water. And whatever they bring home is their after school snack. This is pretty normal for an Australian child's lunchbox.
