Bretcha was appointed interim director general at the Amsterdam-headquartered organisation in March 2023, and prior to that, had been president of Esomar between 2019 and 2021.

Before joining Esomar, Bretcha spent 12 years as international director at Netquest.

Announcing the news in a LinkedIn post addressed to the Esomar community, Bretcha wrote: “I joined Esomar as Interim Director General in March 2023 with the mission of restoring stability and reputation during a critical moment in the organization’s governance. As we close 2025, I am proud to say that this mission has been accomplished.”

Bretcha added: “It has been a privilege to serve this global community as President from 2019 to 2021, as a Council member from 2015 to 2023, and finally as Director General. This community is very dear to me, and it will always have my enthusiasm and support for its continued success.”

Bretcha’s leadership strengthened organisational stability and fostered collaboration and a sense of community across Esomar, according to a statement from the organisation on LinkedIn.

Esomar said in the LinkedIn post: “His contribution comes at a pivotal moment for the organisation, as Esomar embarks on its first long-term strategic roadmap. The 2030 Strategy, initiated by the Council, is designed to future-proof and transform the organisation, driving performance and leadership supported by a highly professional team.

“As Joaquim begins his next chapter, we wish him every success and thank him for the lasting impact he has made, leaving Esomar in a healthy and resilient position as it moves forward.”

In November, Esomar appointed Patrick de Regt as chief operating officer
