Sinan Fahliogullari – Research Hero
Sinan Fahliogullari, senior insight and service design manager, Health and Safety Executive
Starting his career 15 years ago, Sinan Fahliogullari combines service design with research application while delivering insight at the Health and Safety Executive, as part of the team awarded Research Live in-house team of the year 2024. Previously, he was at Kantar Public, delivering research programmes on various policy areas, and led a research team at EdComs.
Sinan was nominated because he "championed inclusive research that listened to the voices of some of society’s most marginalised groups, including residents with disabilities, those who do not speak English, the digitally excluded and those on low incomes. His work has helped make sure the Building Safety Regulator genuinely serves all residents’ needs. Sinan exemplifies how research can directly support vulnerable groups and advance social equity."
1. What is the biggest challenge you have faced during your career?
There are so many of them (and I am sure it is no different for anyone working in research!) Research is such a dynamic space where no two days are the same, with fresh challenges constantly emerging. But if I must pick one, it would be my current role – providing insight to support the establishment of a new government regulator. The complexity of the task made this challenge pretty unique, but it showed me, again, that collaboration and relationship building are very important across all stages of research to generate insight that is relevant and applicable to business needs.
2. What will be the next big trend or development in the research industry, and why?
Many in the sector will agree with me that we are going through some interesting times, with new use cases of AI emerging almost on a daily basis and different applications appearing across many areas of our personal lives and the way we do business. I expect this trend to continue, and we will see new and creative ways of capturing data with much richer and deeper methods of analysing it. In response to that trend, I believe the role of researchers will move even further towards becoming strategic consultants.
3. Who inspires you as a researcher?
I have been lucky to have the privilege of working with inspiring people throughout my career. It is hard to single anyone out – I learned something from each and every one of them! In my current role, I'm surrounded by passionate and inspiring colleagues who are working tirelessly to make a real difference. My previous teams at Kantar and EdComs were filled with creative minds who approached every problem with a solutions mindset. And most importantly, I have always felt supported.
