In the statement, which was published on behalf of Jane Frost, chief executive at MRS, and the MRS main board, the MRS offered its condolences to the Royal Family.

The statement said: “MRS joins the nation and the wider world in mourning the loss of Her Majesty The Queen. We offer our condolences to the Royal Family at this very sad time.

“Queen Elizabeth II leaves a remarkable legacy through the business, charities and individuals where she has had such an impact, many of which were supported by the research community.”

The statement added: “We will remain forever grateful for Queen Elizabeth II’s decades of public service as the longest-reigning British monarch.”

New guidance will also be issued shortly regarding working practices in light of this news.
