UK Statistics Authority chair to depart

UK – Sir Robert Chote, chair of the UK Statistics Authority, is to step down from the role this autumn.

Chote, who joined the UK Statistics Authority in June 2022, will become the president of Trinity College, Oxford, in September.

The Statistics Authority oversees data produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which has been the subject of scrutiny over issues with the production of official statistics, specifically labour market data.

Last month, an independent review commissioned by the government into the performance and culture of the ONS found “deep-seated issues”.

In the summary of the review’s findings, author Sir Robert Devereux wrote that “the failures of economic statistics” are best considered as an “almost inevitable consequence of the choices made (and not made) at the top of ONS, over several years”.

Devereux’s review also recommended changes to how the ONS is led, with the roles of national statistician and permanent secretary for the ONS temporarily separated to hire a permanent secretary to lead the day-to-day operations of the department.

An announcement posted on the government website revealed that Chote informed the Cabinet Office of his intention to step down as UKSA chair in the autumn. A campaign to appoint his successor will begin within the next few weeks.

In the announcement, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, said: “The Devereux Review findings require immediate action to address the challenges identified and rapidly restore confidence in the core statistics produced by ONS that underpin decision-making.

“New leadership is critical to delivering this outcome and I welcome the launch of that process.”

In May, national statistician Ian Diamond resigned with immediate effect due to health issues, with Emma Rourke, deputy national statistician for health, population and methods, appointed to act in his place on an interim basis.
