Shift Insight has been certified by B Lab UK, a not-for-profit organisation that presides over B Corporation status. A B Corporation is a legal status that demonstrates a company pursues purpose over profit.

The certification process required meeting targets in five key impact areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers.

Evidence of socially and environmentally responsible practices relating to energy supplies, waste and water use, worker compensation, diversity and corporate transparency are also required to reach B Corporation status.

Shift Insight has legally embedded its commitment to purpose beyond profit in its company articles as part of the certification process. The company was set up in 2002 and focuses on the education sector and sustainability.

There are approximately 3,500 businesses worldwide and 300 in the UK that have B Corporation status. Last month, insight and strategy consultancy BritainThinks was accredited as a B Corporation.

Jane Powell, managing director of Shift Insight, said: “Doing good and acting responsibly is absolutely part of our core mission at Shift, whether its expressed through our work in sustainability or through helping our clients in the education and membership sectors.”

Kate Sandle, director of programmes and engagement of B Lab UK, said: “This is a movement of companies who are committed to changing how business operates, who believe business really can be a force for good.

“Their commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to others and really help spread the idea that we can redefine success in business to be as much about people and planet as it is about profit.”
