OpenAI launches new version of ChatGPT

US – AI company OpenAI has launched ChatGPT-5, the latest model of its flagship generative AI platform.

The new version of ChatGPT aims to improve the platform’s performance in writing, coding and health, with the company claiming that GPT-5 outperforms previous models on benchmarks and answering questions.

For coding, GPT-5 showed improvements in complex front-end generation and debugging larger repositories, with the ability to help build websites, apps and games.

The company claimed that the writing facilities had been improved, while also improving its responses to health-related questions, acting “more like an active thought partner, proactively flagging potential concerns and asking questions to give more helpful answers”.

In a blog introducing GPT-5, OpenAI said that the platform “is a significant leap in intelligence over all our previous models” and is “a unified system that knows when to respond quickly and when to think longer to provide expert-level responses”.

ChatGPT‑5 is available to all users, with Plus subscribers getting more usage and Pro subscribers getting access to GPT‑5 pro, a version featuring extended reasoning.

The release of GPT-5 comes days after OpenAI said it was releasing gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, which it described as two ‘open-weight’ language models that can be customised by developers and which are free to download.

The customisable models follow similar releases by AI companies including Meta and Deepseek in recent months.
