Facebook launches Viewpoints research app

News North America Privacy

US – Social media platform Facebook has created its own market research app, Viewpoints, to directly survey users.

Viewpoints will involve users taking part in surveys, tasks and research to earn points. The company describes it as “get rewarded for helping us shape the future of technology” with its insights being used to “influence leading apps and services”.

It also says that all the information shared will be “kept private and secure”.

This follows its previous problems with collecting and protecting data. It paid £500,000 to the ICO last month for failing to protect data in the Cambridge Analytica case, although it did not admit liability.

In the US it was fined $5bn by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over its privacy practices.

Viewpoints will only be available in the US to people over 18.
