Kenyan MPs discuss polling regulations

KENYA— Politicians in Kenya are debating a motion that could lead to government regulation of opinion polling.

The Daily Nation reports that Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau (pictured) tabled a motion calling for an Opinion Polls Control Board to be established to rule on how polls in the country are conducted.

He said that polls must be regulated to guard against “propaganda and misinformation” as the country heads towards an election. Kamau said: “We want to ensure all opinion polls conducted in Kenya adhere to the rule of law. They must be conducted in a way that will show clearly the scientific method used.”

Budalang’i MP Abadu Namwamba warned that the motion could be seen as an attempt to limit a constitutional right.

Last month Kenyan vice president Kalonzo Musyoka attacked the country’s pollsters, accusing them of misleading the public.
