Intel acquires outdoor media measurement technology firm

US— Chip maker Intel has acquired CognoVision, a Canadian developer of out-of-home audience measurement technology.

CognoVision places cameras in shops and on digital signage to count how many people are exposed to adverts and their basic demographic make-up. For in-store tracking purposes, the technology monitors how customers move around stores.

Intel said the acquisition was part of its “overall digital signage strategy”, which includes a partnership with Microsoft and NEC Corporation. Together, the three firms have embarked on a mission to “provide an integrated digital signage offering for the global market” and will collaborate on developing hardware, software, system integration and services.
