US— Entertainment trade publication Variety has struck a deal with social media research firm Fizziology to carry a weekly chart of the most talked about movies in social media.
The Weekly Fizz10 chart will be published every Wednesday on Variety’s website.
The chart tracks a movie’s online buzz a month before its release through to the third week of its release. The volume, sentiment and placement of social media buzz are measured to provide an overall score.
Fizziology claims that “real people – not automated keyword searches – read a statistically relevant sample of the social media chatter to grade sentiment, spot trends and identify what is driving the conversation”.
The chart has made its debut alongside other Variety charts measuring box office performance, TV ratings and album sales. Topping the first chart is, fittingly, The Social Network – David Fincher’s new film about Mark Zuckerberg and the creation of Facebook. Also registering positive buzz are Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Robert Rodriguez’s Machete and documentary Catfish.
