US — Consumer spend tracking group NPD has purchased Nielsen’s VideoScan point-of-sale retail tracking service for the home video market.
VideoScan monitors DVD sales, including HD and Blu-ray sales, based on information collected from retailers. The NPD Group will integrate the service into its existing data assets with a view to assisting those in the entertainment industry to understand and anticipate how consumers are acquiring entertainment.
“This is a time of great opportunity for the entertainment industry, but because technology and consumer behaviour are changing so rapidly, it’s easy to get left behind,” said NPD president and chief operating officer Karyn Schoenbart. “The entertainment ecosystem has become complex and multilayered, and our mission is to collect the information our clients need and apply our research knowledge and industry expertise to give them a winning advantage in business decision making.”
Nielsen will continue to operate all aspects of the VideoScan service to clients during a transition period, including data processing and product support/ servicing.
