DSIT to be abolished in government reshuffle
DSIT was formed in 2023 under the premiership of Rishi Sunak, and was tasked with boosting support for science and technology, especially AI, over the past three-and-a-half years. Liz Kendall was the most recent secretary of state for the department.
However, Kendall left government following the appointment of a new cabinet after Burnham officially became prime minister on Monday ( 20th July), and DSIT will now be moved into the Department for Business and Trade.
The newly combined department will be led by Jonathan Reynolds, who was appointed secretary of state for business, innovation, science and trade.
In addition, Kanishka Narayan has been named minister for AI and will attend cabinet.
Lord Vallance, former chief scientific adviser, has also left government, having served as minister for science, innovation, research and nuclear.
Other major appointments in government following the ascension of Burnham include John Healey being named chancellor of the exchequer, Ed Miliband as foreign secretary and Lucy Powell as education secretary.
