‘Anomaly’ added to senate bill to secure funding for Census Bureau
The organisations sent a letter on 29th July 2026 to commerce secretary Harold Lutnick, organised by The Census Project, calling for a continuing resolution to keep federal agencies, including the Census Bureau, operational if congress is unable to pass a final appropriations bill by the end of September to continue financing government departments.
Following the letter, the senate has added a funding anomaly to its draft continuing resolution, with the intention of allowing the Census Bureau to get the money required to continue preparations for the 2030 census.
The letter had warned that many important activities at the Census Bureau could have been jeopardised by insufficient funding, including analysis of the 2026 census test, updates to local census addresses, fielding the American Community Survey (ACS), and the launch of a communications and partnerships programme.
The Insights Association said it would continue to advocate for funding for the 2030 census and the ACS, and noted that the house of representatives had left for August recess without having passed any census-specific provisions.
