The Market Research Society launched the Research Heroes programme to celebrate the sector’s unsung heroes. Zoe Alabaster has joined the cadre of Research Heroes 2024.
After completing a sociology degree, social research was something that Zoe was always interested in and passionate about. After deciding to take a different path into human resources, working initially with the financial services sector, she was excited get the opportunity to move into the research sector, joining IFF in September 2020. As senior people advisor, Zoe provides trusted advice and guidance throughout the employee lifecycle to both managers and employees, chairs IFF’s internal EDI Committee and strives to make IFF a great place to work for all colleagues. Zoe loves that fact that gets to do a job she loves, while supporting the team to achieve great outcomes in impactful research.
Zoe was nominated because "her role goes far beyond the norm; she serves as a vital support for our entire organisation. Whether offering a listening ear, guiding managerial tasks, conducting appraisals, or orchestrating social events, Zoe contributes her expertise to every aspect of our work. Zoe promotes research within research and regularly collects data from our teams using surveys to better understand employee well-being and organisation pain points. Her efforts ensure that everyone feels valued, supported and empowered toward inclusion.”
What is the biggest challenge you have faced during you career?
A big challenge was starting my role with IFF remotely during the pandemic. As a member of the people team, I was keen to build relationships organically and not be that ‘elusive’ member of the team who no one really knew. It couldn’t have been further from reality – and with all the activities going on, and the friendly and welcoming culture at IFF, I felt like a team member from the moment I started. Now, I strive to ensure that everyone joining IFF feels the same way.
What will be the next big trend or development in the research industry, and why?
Perhaps not specific to the research industry, but our focus on equity, diversity and inclusion has been inspiring and a great learning curve for me personally and professionally. In particular, it’s been great to see more early career options into the research industry, for example via apprenticeships and internships.
Who inspires you as a researcher?
There’s probably not enough space here to name all of the IFF team, but I’m particularly inspired by those who speak with respondents and collect our data firsthand. Getting people to give up their free time is no easy feat, and their resilience and professionalism is admirable.
