UK — Facebook and GfK have conducted a study into people’s behaviour as they move across multiple devices.

The study of 2,018 UK adults (a parallel study of over 2,000 people also took place in the US) investigates how frequently people use devices like smartphones, tablets and computers during the day.

Key findings include:

  • More than 60% of online adults in both markets use at least two devices every day; 25% (US) and 20% (UK) use three
  • More than 40% of online adults in both markets sometimes start an activity on one device and finish it on another (generally moving to a larger screen – 60% to a laptop and 25% to a tablet).
  • Around three quarters ( 77%: UK; 76%: US) use smartphones for communication and social activity while out-and-about, followed by 50% (UK) and 43% (US) who use tablets as an entertainment hub at home
  • The laptop or PC is seen as the ‘workhorse’: 86% of UK and 80% of US online adults that own one use it at home and it tends to be dedicated to important tasks like work or managing finances.
