Data.gov future uncertain amid US budget stalemate

Government North America

US— Data.gov, the federal government’s open data initiative, could be taken offline in the next several months along with six other websites set up to promote transparency, according to a report by Federal News Radio.

The report quotes anonymous sources saying funding for the sites will begin to run out on 20 April.

America currently faces a budget stalemate, with Democrats and Republicans split on how much to cut government spending.

The White House has asked for $35m to fund e-government initiatives this year, but the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is only prepared to stump up $2m.
