Chloe Byrne, Head of Innovations, Vanson Bourne

Chloe’s journey in market research began with a six-month work placement at Lorien PLC, evolving into a 12.5-year tenure where she rose to research manager. She experienced the industry’s shift from postal to online surveys, managed automotive projects and helped establish a dealership syndicate survey. Chloe then joined Vanson Bourne, where she has been for over a decade. Her roles have ranged from project manager to associate director and interim research director, culminating in her current position as head of innovations, where she continues to shape the future of business-to-business technology research.

Chloe was nominated because she "leads our AI initiatives and spends time outside of office hours investigating AI technologies and applications for us to deploy to clients who expect us to be at the forefront of the AI revolution. Throughout her 10 years at Vanson Bourne, Chloe has been a colleague we have always been able to rely on to provide encouragement, support, mentoring and a positive attitude."

What is the biggest challenge you have faced during your career?

A few weeks before I stepped into the role of interim research director, the UK had been forced into its first Covid lockdown. Not only did I have to manage the entire research team throughout that turbulent time, fully remotely, but I also had to help my son with homeschooling during primary school. Looking back on it now, I'm not sure how I managed to juggle it all. It definitely helped that I had a brilliant team around me, including new team members whom we hired remotely and didn't meet in person for a very long time.

What will be the next big trend or development in the research industry, and why?

As head of innovations at Vanson Bourne, I'm heavily involved in our AI strategy, and we have been trialing some very interesting generative AI technologies – it is important not to be a laggard in the AI adoption curve. Generative AI is going to dramatically change the way we work in the near future. I believe it will be as revolutionary as how the internet changed office life several decades ago. It will become an integral part of business operations, transforming how companies interact with customers, manage operations and compete in the global market. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the positive changes that it will bring to the research industry.

Who inspires you as a researcher?

I have had the privilege of working with so many brilliant researchers over the last 20-plus years, colleagues and clients alike; it is impossible to name just one. From the old hats who taught me the ropes in the early days to new starters coming in at any level, you have all inspired me and taught me something in some way, shape, or form over the years – thank you.
