2024 best place to work: The Mix Global

UK – The Mix Global won Research Live Best Place to Work at the MRS Awards.

The Mix aims to run a ‘people-first’ workplace culture that has a four-day workweek, with the policy meaning that employees work 20% fewer days for the same salary as elsewhere in the industry.

The four-day week policy has had a significant impact on employee wellbeing and retention, encouraging a healthy work-life balance.

This approach extends to the company’s holiday accrual policy, where employees still receive the standard 25 days of annual leave, in addition to bank holidays.

The Mix also trains line managers to prioritise their team’s wellbeing, promoting empathy, work-life balance and recognising diverse contributions.

Financial results are shared with the entire team every semester to make sure everyone is aware of the business’ current challenges and plans.

Internal surveys are also run, with Net Promoter Scores consistently positive and improving, with many citing the positive culture and working environment.

Survey results and action plans are shared with the team, and The Mix runs quarterly ‘ways of working’ sessions to allow employees to voice potential challenges and collaboratively develop solutions, which are then implemented by the senior project operations manager.

The Mix has a people operations team, which is led by an employee experience manager. The role makes sure employees are well looked after and happy.

Wellbeing and DE&I committees, formed by volunteers across seniority levels, allow the business to continually explore new ways to enhance its culture, generating ideas for training, awareness initiatives and more, as well as ensuring The Mix is consistently delivering on these fronts. This is evident in the company’s recruitment efforts and the programmes and initiatives it sponsors, such as through its relationship with Colour of Research.

The Mix also offers support for career development and mentorship, with internal and external training opportunities. One such initiative is the MixSafari, its version of a sabbatical. It offers employees with three or more years of experience the chance to undertake self-designed research projects wherever they want around the world for three weeks.

The programme is fully sponsored by The Mix and also gives employees 10 additional days of annual leave.

The company has a career progression framework that allows employees to understand their growth opportunities from entry-level positions to senior management roles.

Of its eight-person senior management team, aside from the founder, five have been employees at The Mix for between two-and-a-half and nine years, and five are internal promotions. As well as expanding the team, there have been seven promotions within the last year.

Maria Alejandra Ferrés, partner and head of global operations, said: “What we choose to do as a business will undoubtedly impact people’s lives, and that comes with great responsibility. It’s a very proud moment for us to be recognised as the Best Place to Work among so many brilliant agencies.

“‘Always put people first’ is one of our core behaviours at The Mix and every single person in our business plays a role in creating and maintaining the culture we have.

“From the four-day week we started eight years ago to all the work going into being a healthy, inclusive, transparent, respectful and exciting workplace, we’re constantly challenging ourselves to do better. This award feels particularly meaningful to us; we couldn’t be happier.”
