News North America

US — YouTube is poised to offer a paid subscription model that allows users to bypass ads.

The plan was apparently revealed in an email sent by YouTube to video creators, in which the company said it was “taking another big step” in favour of choice.

Video creators currently receive a share of advertising revenues, but under the new model would instead be offered a percentage of revenues generated by subscription fees. According to a story on tech news site TechCrunch, YouTube’s updated partner programme terms suggest that creators will receive the same percentage – 55% – of subscription revenues as they would advertising revenues.

Neither the letter nor the terms make reference to the price of the subscription or when the option will be offered to the public.
