Alabama Education Association forced to suspend polling work

Government North America

US— A polling centre attached to the Alabama Education Association (AEA) has suspended operations in response to a new state law that prohibits member dues being used for political purposes, including polling.

The Capital Survey Research Centre (CSRC) had been running since 1996 and employed some 30 people.

Director Gerald Johnson said in a statement that the suspension of the centre’s work “comes at a cost to the public democratic processes of the state, including planned surveys on a number of important projects”.

He said the AEA “regrets” the job losses but looks forward “to reactivating the work of the CSRC and its important role in the state’s public policy processes” when possible.

AEA represents teachers and school workers in Alabama.
