This increase in funding was requested by the Census Project coalition stakeholders.

Howard Fienberg, co-director of the Census Project coalition, said: “Congress has stepped in with necessary funding at this crucial last year of preparation before the 2020 headcount. The decennial census clock is ticking down.”

The 2019 funding is on top of about a billion dollars in forward funding provided in the final 2018 appropriations law that allowed 2020 Census preparations to continue during the past few months despite the disruption of continuing resolutions and a lengthy government shutdown.

The Census Bureau said, in addition at least $8bn would be needed for the roll out in 2020.
