Top 50 US agencies see revenues rise 6% in 2007

Honomichl review finds the going slow for the biggest US MR firms, with 13 reporting falling revenue last year

US-- Revenue for the top 50 US research agencies was up 6% in 2007 to $7.83bn, according to the latest figures from industry watcher Jack Honomichl.

Growth for companies at the top end of the table was rooted in the single digits, with only Westat breaking the 10% mark.

That revenue spurt pushed the government research specialist to fourth place behind Kantar, IMS Health and Nielsen.

Web measurement firm Hitwise – bought by data giant Experian in a $240m deal last year – was the highest new entry in the rankings at number 37, coming in six places ahead of Compete – another web measurement firm making its Honomichl debut at number 43.

The two companies topped the list of the fastest-growing agencies, with revenue up 50% year-on-year in both cases. But at the other end of the growth spectrum was Public Opinion Strategies, reporting a decline of 48%.

Overall, 13 firms saw sales fall year-on-year – almost three times as many as in 2006.

2007's top ten firms by US research revenue were:

1. Nielsen – $2,173m, up 7.9%

2. IMS Health – $801m, up 8.6%

3. Kantar Group – $527m, up 3.5%

4. Westat – $468m, up 10.4%

5. Information Resources – $441m, up 2.1%
