BBC picks 2CV to study on-screen portrayal of homosexuals

UK— Research agency 2CV is working with the BBC on a study looking at the way in which lesbian, gay and bisexual people are portrayed across the corporation’s TV, radio and internet output.

Language, tone, stereotyping, on-screen talent, humour and scheduling are just some of the focus areas of the project, said Tim Davie, director of audio and music and a member of the BBC’s diversity board.

The research will include both qual and quant elements, as well as an online questionnaire which is open to all members of the public.

In a blog post, Davie described the work as “the most comprehensive piece of research ever carried out in this area by the BBC”.

“We’re doing it because, as a public service broadcaster, we have a responsibility to serve all our audiences and it’s vital that we reflect the differences among all of the UK’s diverse communities, nations and regions,” he said.

Findings are due in the summer and will be “embedded” in programme making, Davie said.
