MRIA finds sugging still strong in Canada

Forty percent of respondents received illegal calls over the past year

CANADA-- Selling under the guise of research (sugging) remains a problem in Canada, according to the results of a new survey carried out by the country's Marketing Research & Intelligence Association (MRIA).

The survey, carried out in conjunction with Harris-Decima, found that 40% of the 2,000 people interviewed had been contacted by suggers over the past year.

MRIA executive director Brendan Wycks said these fake researchers were a “plague” that was making the real research industry's challenges more difficult.

However, the figures mark a slight improvement since the MRIA's last study two years ago, when 41% reported receiving sugging calls. In 2005, it was 53%.
