MRC rejects PPM in New York, Philadelphia

Arbitron's radio ratings system denied accreditation in two major markets

US-- Arbitron's portable people meter-based radio ratings systems in New York and Philadelphia have been denied accreditation by media auditor the Media Rating Council (MRC), according to the company's SEC filings.

The MRC refused to stamp its approval on the electronic audience measurement services back in January, although the reasons are not known as MRC keeps its deliberations confidential.

So far, only Arbitron's PPM service in Houston has been accredited. This occurred back in January 2007 – but not before the agency submitted a plan to improve respondent compliance.

The firm has previously acknowledged problems getting its samples up to size in Philadelphia and New York, and responded by increasing incentives for participation and weeding out those who were not complying.

Arbitron will continue to seek MRC accreditation in both markets.
