Minnesota court suspends exit poll ban

Preliminary injunction will allow exit polls on election day – final judgement still to come

US-- A district court in Minnesota has granted an injunction preventing state officials from enforcing a ban on exit polls being carried out within 100 feet of polling stations on election day.

The lawsuit was filed last month by a group of news organisations who claimed the rule was unconstitutional as it restricts their ability to freely report on elections.

The court is yet to make a final judgement in the case, but issued the preliminary injunction yesterday in time for preparations for the vote on 4 November.

Similar rules in several other states have been removed in all cases where they have been challenged, including the South Dakota presidential primary earlier this year, after a challenge by the same group of companies.
