Médiamétrie plans mobile TV ratings

French media research body prepares for new mobile TV standard

FRANCE-- The industry-owned media research body Médiamétrie has selected an audience measurement tool from Gemalto for a planned mobile TV ratings service.

Gemalto's solution is based on software installed on the SIM cards of mobile phones, which is able to record the channel being watched, the user's location and the time of day.

Médiamétrie is developing the ratings service in preparation for the planned launch of Personal Mobile TV in France later this year. The system, similar to those already up and running in countries including Japan, Italy and Finland, will allow TV channels to be broadcast free of charge to mobile devices. Some mobile TV channels already operate using existing networking technologies such as 3G.
