Indonesian pollsters lose registration fight

Election commission refuses to relax election regulations

INDONESIA-- Indonesian pollsters have lost their battle to overturn a ruling that requires them to register with national and local election commissions before publishing election polls.

According to the Jakarta Globe, the General Elections Commission (KPU) refused to revise its ruling at a meeting last week with the recently formed Indonesian Public Opinion Survey Association.

The association was formed to fight the regulations, which it claims put too much power in the hands of the commission and will obstruct pollsters' work.

The Jakarta Globe quoted chairman Andrinof Chaniago as saying the ruling was “against the election law” and suggesting that a better solution would be for companies to register with the KPU only.
