Congress to discuss Homeland Security media monitoring

US— Lawmakers are set to meet next week to examine the Department of Homeland Security’s social media monitoring programme, which is used to identify potential threats to the country.
Congress members led by Patrick Meehan and Jackie Speer highlighted “privacy and civil liberties concerns” back in January, claiming that although monitoring social sites was a useful tool for looking for potential threats, the DHS should “be mindful of the rights of citizens”.
DHS countered that social media monitoring was “for situational awareness purposes only”.
The Committee on Homeland Security’s Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence will meet for the hearing on 16 February.
