Futuresource opens virtual focus group facility

3D virtual research centre recreates face-to-face research online

UK-- Research and consulting firm Futuresource has opened a virtual research facility where focus groups, interviews and product tests can be conducted online.

The Real Time Research centre was built in collaboration with virtual worlds specialist Rivers Run Red, using the Second Life Grid platform.

Participants navigate the centre using a 3D avatar of themselves. It includes a focus group facility and interview rooms and is equipped for product design testing, with participants able to look at 3D models of products.

The system incorporates voice over IP technology to allow moderators and panellists to speak to each other.

Futuresource hopes the system will help firms to cut costs while keeping respondents engaged. Director Tony Bicknell said: “Focus group panellists can be invited for a secure session from anywhere in the world very quickly and at very low cost”.
