FTC to examine data privacy issues of mobile device tracking

North America Privacy

US — The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is hosting a series of seminars to discuss the privacy issues related to a number of new areas of data-related technology.

These seminars will bring together academics, businesses, industry representatives and consumer advocates and will be open to the public.

The session on mobile device tracking will take place in February. It will address privacy questions including the types of information gained from technologies, the privacy and security risks associated with them, and what information and choices are provided to consumers about these types of tracking.

This comes after a recent announcement that a number of location analytics firms have reached an agreement with the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) to sign up to a code of conduct that will ensure people are notified when location tracking takes place. It will also give them the information they need to be able to opt out.

More information on this and other sessions can be found here.
