Facebook ditches polling tool

Paid poll service disappears after two years with ‘no definite plans' for a replacement

US-- Facebook has pulled its polling tool after less than two years.

The tool allowed anyone to create a poll on the social network site, paying according to the number of responses sought and the time in which they were needed.

Polls could be targeted at the site's millions of users based on age, sex, location or profile, but were limited to single questions with up to five multiple choice answers.

The introduction of the tool was seen as a sign of social networks getting in on the online sample game, tapping into the potential of a pool of millions of engaged users from traditionally hard-to-reach target groups. Its quiet withdrawal 20 months later suggests it was less than successful.

Facebook did not give specific reasons for removing the tool, but told TechCrunch: “The ability to create Facebook Polls is no longer available on the public site, though users may still receive Facebook Polls created internally by Facebook. Facebook is exploring options for making a polling product publicly available again in the future but has no definite plans to discuss at this point.”

Facebook is now advising users to turn to one of the other polling applications available on the site.
