Con artists seize on MSPA name for scam

Scammers conning people out of their personal details are passing themselves off as the Mystery Shopping Providers Association

UK/US-- Scammers are attempting to con people out of their personal details by passing themselves off as the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA), Research has learned.

An email sent to a staff member on Friday night claimed to be recruiting people to take part in mystery shopping projects and requested their name, address, occupation and contact information.

The email promised a cheque payment of $300 for each project, and was signed ‘Mystery Shopper' along with the web address of the MSPA, mysteryshop.org.

Research passed along the email to the MSPA's European branch in the Netherlands. Representative Nikky Alkemade said: “In the last couple of weeks MSPA has received several messages from shoppers in the UK informing us that they received messages from a company using the name of MSPA.”

The problem also extends to the US. MSPA North America has posted a consumer warning on its homepage, urging people not to be fooled by the use of the association's name, logo or web address.
