COI reviews roster

The Central Office of Information (COI), the UK government department responsible for marketing communications, has completed the review of its research roster.

The roster, which must be reviewed every three to five years, now includes a wider range of research companies and new categories such as new media specialists and mystery shopping.

Successful applicants, ranging from independent consultants to the some of the most recognised names in research, were assessed on different criteria including technical capability, experience and quality control.

Catherine Blizzard, COI's director of research, said: "A lot of the work we do looks at audiences that are traditionally hard to reach, for example ethnic minorities or drug users. As a result, we need a diversity of companies, from generalists to specialists."

COI works with departments in Whitehall to produce research on topics ranging from armed forces recruitment and benefit fraud to blood donation and car crime prevention.

The annual turnover of COI's research department to March 2001 was £10m.
