BT confirms second Phorm tracking trial

Internet provider secretly tracked customers in 2006

UK-- Telephone and internet provider BT has confirmed that a second test for the controversial Phorm advertising system took place between September and October 2006.

The admission, made in a statement on Monday, was a response to claims from The Register, an online technology news service, which purported to have seen documents relating to the 2006 test showing that around 18,000 BT customers were unknowingly tracked.

In a previous statement on March 17, BT admitted to a secret test in 2007, but no mention was made of the 2006 trial.

BT said: “The purpose of the test was to evaluate the functional and technical performance of the platform. It is important for BT to ensure that before any new technologies are deployed, they are robust and fit for purpose. No personally identifiable information was processed, stored or disclosed during this test.”
