Semetric updates music popularity tracking tool

UK— Tech firm Semetric has unveiled an improved web-based version of its Musicmetric service, which tracks social media and illegal filesharing activity for thousands of artists.

Musicmetric Pro runs as an in-browser app rather than a standalone program, and offers improved data, the company said.

It tracks mentions of songs or artists on social media sites, blogs, reviews, and news sources, as well as keeping tabs on how many times a track is (illegally) downloaded using BitTorrent.

The technology can pinpoint downloads to city level, allowing record labels to see if an artist or track is popular in a certain area.

Semetric co-founder Marie-Alicia Chang said: “There are no longer fixed gatekeepers in the world of music, but a multitude of drivers and catalysts fuelling the relationship between artists, their music and the fans.”
