US — Facebook is being taken to court by an Illinois man who claims it broke state law by collecting biometric data.
Carlo Licata has claimed in a lawsuit filed last week that Facebook has “secretly amassed the world’s largest privately held database of consumer biometrics data”, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune.
Licata says that Facebook has violated state law by not informing him in writing that his biometric data was being collected or stored, or when it would be destroyed.
The lawsuit cites the Facebook feature ‘tag suggestions’, which uses facial recognition software to match people in newly-added photos to ones that have already been tagged.
